Munday Runday: Running on Trips

I’m writing this on the plane on the way back from a trip to Florida! I was at the Everglades, Key West, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale.

It’s no Cleveland

The trip was pretty good, and I’m glad I brought my running shoes! I know K and I have both mentioned a few times how fun it is to run in new cities. This time however, I didn’t really experience the city differently through running (the hotels I stayed in were in military bases – I’ll talk more about that some other time).

However, getting out on the pavement during a trip felt good for another reason. It felt good because running felt like a priority. Just because I was on vacation, and my schedule was weirder than it normally is, didn’t mean that I couldn’t make time to do the things that were important to me. And that’s important, because things are always weird. There are always disruptions, there are always weird schedules, and if I always waited for things to “settle down” in order to run, I’d barely ever be out there.

When I was a kid, I wondered who the types of people were who used the fitness centers at hotels. I mean, you’re on a trip! Why bother! And now I recognize that it’s the type of people who make fitness a priority, and can’t get interrupted every time they travel. And I hope that’s the type of person I can be.
